Subject: Message from the Chair

Welcome to to the first Electronic News Net of the SIAM Activity Group
on Orthogonal Polynomials and Special Functions of 2005.

This is an exciting period for our activity group with the forthcoming
publication of the Digital Library of Mathematical Functions (DLMF). I
feel that this is an opportunity for the activity group to get a higher
profile within the Mathematics community. Special functions and
orthogonal polynomials have a long and distinguished history which has
impacted upon many areas of Mathematics and its applications, notably
the classic text by Whittaker and Watson and the Bateman Project. There
are many links between the interests of our activity group and other
areas of Mathematics as well as applications to Physics and Engineering.
I feel that during the next few years these need to be further developed
and the publication of the DLMF provides an ideal opportunity.

Currently there are links being developed with researchers in other
areas of Mathematics. An illustration of the forthcoming joint
conference to be held in Munich, Germany in July 2005 consisting of
"Orthogonal Polynomials, Special Functions and Applications",
"Conference on Difference Equations and Applications" and "Symmetries
and Integrability of Difference Equations", all of whom are groups which
hold regular conferences. I am particularly looking forward to this
meeting having attended recent meetings in the "Orthogonal Polynomials,
Special Functions and Applications" and "Symmetries and Integrability of
Difference Equations" series.

I look forward to meeting members of the Activity group at various
conferences during my term as Chair of the group.

Subject: Death of Johannes (Joop) Boersma

Joop Boersma, Professor Emeritus at the Technical University, Eindhoven,
The Netherlands, died on November 29, 2004. He was born on December 5,
1937. He studied mathematics at the University of Groningen, and
obtained his PhD there in 1964 (cum laude) with a thesis "Boundary value
problems in diffraction theory and lifting surface theory", supervised
by Professor A.I. van de Vooren). After a stay at the Courant Institute
in 1965, he started work at the TU Eindhoven in 1966, first as a
lecturer, but already in 1967 as a full professor. He officially retired
in 1998, but remained active in mathematics and was in his office almost
every working day.

Joop Boersma worked in applied analysis (mechanics, optics, fluid
mechanics), where he used special functions (in particular Bessel
functions and confluent hypergeometric functions) and asymptotics as
important tools. His expertise, precision and willingness to answer
questions were much appreciated by students, and by colleagues in
Eindhoven, the Netherlands, and throughout the world.

Subject: Death of John T. Lewis

John T. Lewis, formerly of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies,
known for his work in quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, applied
probability and applications to telecommunications, died early last
year.  John was a user of special functions with a rare insight into
some deeper aspects of their structure as I discovered in some work with
him using the Hellmann-Feynman theorem in the 1970s. This led to later
work on monotonicity of zeros by M. Ismail and R. Zhang, and by E. K.
Ifantis, among others.  But Lewis had many other scientific and personal
qualities, well captured by the anonymous author of the obituary in:

The six Painlevé equations (nonlinear ordinary differential equations of
the second order with nonmovable singularities) have attracted the
attention of mathematicians for more than 100 years. These equations and
their solutions, the Painlevé transcendents, nowadays play an important
role in many areas of mathematics, such as the theory of special
functions, the theory of integrable systems, differential geometry, and
mathematical aspects of quantum field theory.

The present book is devoted to the symmetry of Painlevé equations
(especially those of types II and IV). The author studies families of
transformations for several types of Painlevé equations--the so-called
Bäcklund transformations--which transform solutions of a given Painlevé
equation to solutions of the same equation with a different set of
parameters. It turns out that these symmetries can be interpreted in
terms of root systems associated to affine Weyl groups. The author
describes the remarkable combinatorial structures of these symmetries,
and shows how they are related to the theory of $\tau$-functions
associated to integrable systems.

Prerequisites include undergraduate calculus and linear algebra with
some knowledge of group theory. The book is suitable for graduate
students and research mathematicians interested in special functions and
the theory of integrable systems.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
The Ralph E. Kleinman Prize

SIAM will present the Ralph E. Kleinman Prize at the 2005 SIAM Annual
Meeting to be held July 11-15, 2005, in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The prize is awarded to an individual for outstanding research or other
contributions that bridge the gap between mathematics and applications.
Work that uses high-level mathematics and/or invents new mathematical
tools to solve applied problems from engineering, science, and
technology is particularly appropriate.  The prize may be awarded for a
single notable achievement or for a collection of such achievements.

Description of the Award
The award will consist of a hand-calligraphed, framed certificate and a
cash award of $5,000.  SIAM will reimburse reasonable travel expenses
for the recipient to attend the award ceremony.

Nominations
A letter of nomination, including a curriculum vitae and description of
the achievement(s), should be sent to the address below.  You are
encouraged to send electronic files via e-mail.  Supporting letters are
welcome.  Nominations must be received in the SIAM office by February

Subject: SIAM Student Paper Prize - Call for Submissions

DEADLINE APPROACHING - CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

SIAM Student Paper Prize

The 2005 SIAM STUDENT PAPER PRIZE will be presented at the 2005 SIAM
Annual Meeting scheduled for July 11-15, 2005, in New Orleans,
Louisiana.

Principal Guidelines
The SIAM Student Paper Prize is awarded every year to the student
author(s)  of the most outstanding paper(s) submitted to the SIAM
Student Paper Competition.  This award is based solely on the merit and
content of the student's contribution to the submitted paper.  Up to
three papers will be selected for the prizes.

The purpose of the Student Paper Prize is to recognize outstanding
scholarship by students in applied mathematics and scientific computing.

Selection Procedures
Eligibility is restricted to students in good standing who have not
received their Ph.D. prior to March 1 of the year in which the award is
given.

Submissions may be based on co-authored papers, provided that the
student's advisor will attest that the student's work played a pivotal
role in the results.  A letter from the student's advisor or department
chair must accompany each entry to verify these conditions.

To enter the competition, a student must submit: (1) an extended
abstract, in English, of a paper, and (2) a short biography.  The total
length of the submitted abstract (including bibliography) may not exceed
five pages.  The student also must submit (3) the complete paper, which
will be used for clarification of any questions the committee may have
about the extended abstract.  In addition, the student's advisor or an
interested faculty member must submit (4) a letter describing and
evaluating the paper's contribution to the literature and the student's
role in the scholarship.

Deadline for Submissions
All papers and accompanying documentation must be received at the SIAM
office by February 1, 2005.

Notification of Prize Winner(s)
The SIAM President will notify the recipient(s) at least six weeks
before the award date.
Each recipient is required to present his or her paper at the meeting
where the prize(s) are awarded.  If attending the meeting poses a
serious hardship, an exception may be granted by the SIAM President.

Description of the Award
Each recipient of the SIAM Student Paper Prize shall receive a framed
certificate and a cash award of $1,000.  Winners also receive $500
toward travel expenses and gratis registration for the meeting.

The SIAM Activity Group on Orthogonal Polynomials and Special Functions
consists of a broad set of mathematicians, both pure and applied.  The
Group also includes engineers and scientists, students as well as
