EDRI Federal Project Inventory:
Effects of Environmental Contaminants on Loggerhead Sea Turtles (Caretta Caretta)

  1. Sponsor Organization: DIVISION OF REFUGES & DIVISION OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONTAMINANTS, U. S. FISH AND WILDLIFESERVICE, DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR

  2. Project Title: EFFECTS OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONTAMINANTS ON LOGGERHEAD SEA TURTLES (CARETTA CARETTA)

  3. Project Focus: ECOLOGICAL EFFECTS

  4. Description: Contaminants are known to be sequestered in vitellogenin of reptilian eggs duringfolliculogenesis. However, no data are available relating to the uptake of contaminants throughthe eggshell during incubation. The possibility of using contaminated dredged material torenourish beaches may produce sub-lethal, insidious physiological and anatomical changes. Thesechanges could introduce sterile young into a population, but these effects may not be noticed untilloggerhead sea turtles reach reproductive maturity between 12-15 years of age. Therefore, itbecomes implicit to identify and alleviate contaminant sources before a population crash orextinction become a reality. Data from collections of unhatched loggerhead turtle eggs from nestson developed and undeveloped beaches in Georgia and eastern Florida will be compared.
