- Description:
-
- Abstract:
-
The Southwest Exotic Plants Mapping Program
(SWEMP) is a collaborative effort between the
Colorado Plateau Field Station and collaborating
partners in Arizona and New Mexico. This project
is an ongoing effort to amass a regional database
of invasive alien plant distributions in the
southwestern United States. The database
represents the known point occurrences of invasive
alien plant species within Arizona, New Mexico and
adjacent portions of Utah. These data, collected
from 1995 through 1998, represent the field
efforts of various state, federal and tribal
agencies.
- Purpose:
-
This dataset was created to provide a regional
perspective on invasive alien plant distributions.
It can be used to assist land managers, as well as
the general public regarding the location,
management and control of known invasive alien
plant species distributions.

SWEMP operates as a collaborative effort between
the USGS and interested parties. The
responsibilities of the USGS are to provide data
entry support, database management, and data
distribution. Data collection is the
responsibility of the collaborators. Therefore,
an estimate of accuracy regarding the plant
identifications and assignments of attribute
information cannot be reported. Data entry
conducted by USGS personnel were double checked
for accuracy. Collaborator representatives are
asked to provide quality checks prior to
submittal. However, once submitted, USGS
personnel quality check all collaborator data for
accuracy and to ensure data was submitted in the
correct format. All data are compiled into MS
Access and numerous "duplicate queries" (as
defined by MS Access) are conducted. These
queries are executed to identify any repeated
records, and to ensure data is submitted in
SWEMP's standardized and cosistant format.
Thereafter, the data was entered into ArcView and
reviewed for general spatial accuracy (i.e. if
data were collected in Prescott National Forest,
those data should occur within the Prescott
National Forest boundary).
- Logical_Consistency_Report:
-
This data set is an ArcInfo coverage, built for
point topology. Multiple points at a single
location represent multiple observations. All
points have associated attribute information.
- Completeness_Report:
-
Records containing errors, which could not be
rectified by the respective collaborator were
omitted from the database. Also, data submitted
for species that did not occur on the "1998 SWEMP
Noxious Weed and Special Concern Species List"
were excluded.
- Positional_Accuracy:
-
- Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
-
- Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
-
Point locations were derived using either GPS with
differential, GPS without differential, or by
estimating and marking the location on a USGS
topographic map (these data were later converted
to UTMs and entered into a spreadsheet).

This database was developed by compiling raw and
digital data submitted by collaborators. If raw
data were submitted, SWEMP personnel entered these
data into MS Excel. Digital data were compiled by
importing MS Excel files, Auto-Cad files, and the
.dbf file component of an ArcView .shp file into a
temporary MS Access database for quality checks.
Once all digital and raw data were processed,
these data were archived and managed in an MS
Access database. Data is retained in Access
format for additional quality checks and data
analyses. A check for infestations occuring on
private lands is also conducted. If SWEMP
personnel do not recieve written permission from
the private landowner, UTM data are rounded to the
nearest 1000 meters; by doing this, we mask the
recorded location of the infestation thus
protecting the rights of the private land owners.
Geospatial data were converted from UTMs to
"geographic" for presentation on the SWEMP
Internet Map Server. Both coordinate systems are
provided in the database.
