DECEMBER, 191 1. MONTHLY WEATHER REVIEW. 1921 CLIMATOLOGICAL DATA FOR DECEMBER, 1911. DISTRICT No. 12, COLUMBIA VALLEY. EDWARD A. BEALS, District Editor. GENERAL SUMMARY. Although the mean temperature averawd slightsly more than a degree below normal, the Inon& was generally reco-nized as being unusually pleasant. The weather up to &e 26th was controlled by anticyclones t.liat, moved slowly from the ocean ancl ersisted in remaining over t.he Central Plateau St,ates. perature continued remarkably uniform and t,liere were no very warm or very cold spells. On the 26th a cyclone of the regular winter type made its appearance over western Washinmton, and as t h b depression was quickly followed by anoher the weat, lier bec,ame niore c.liangenble and stormy during the remainder of the month. During this eriod lar e anticyclonic areas were c,entriLl over t,he ganadian fiofthwest that were attended by very low tem- peratures. The cyclones took t,he southeastward track which caused the prevailing winds to be ea.st,erly and con- siderable cold air drained into this district,, es eciall in Montana on the 24th, and the weather was so severe in that section during the last week that the slight excess in temperature that occurred during the first 20 days was overcome and there WAS a defic.iency in the monthly al-er- age of nearly 3". Precipitation while less than usual was well distributed. More than the normal amount, of snow fell at low elevations, while in the mountains the amount was normal. That which fell early became well packed in the. higher ranges, but that at intermediate altitudes was loose and in contlit, ion 60 melt rapidly. The snow in the Oregon valleys was subjected to consiclerttble thawing and a large amount of moisture was absorbed by t,he soil. I n Idaho the ground reniaineil frozen, wliicli prevent'ecl the soil from absorbing any great amount of moisture; but, on the other hand the frozen ground macle the roads good and facilitated the hauling of produce t,o t,he railways. Railway traffic suffered few interruptions, but the st,age of the water in the navi-able rivers was so low that small steamers were greatly %am ered in their operat, ioqs. No casualities occurred at sea En the vicinit of this district), the end of the month was very encouraging. rp nder these conditions the t,em- its eastern portion. Low temperatures wqe R 3 rst fe t in due to stress of weather and the agricu 9 t u r d outlook at TEMPERATURE. The mean temperature for the month was below norinal over the greater art of the district. A moderate excess was re orted in t at ortion of the Colunibia River Valley over a small area in cent, ral and extreme northwestern Washington. While the greatest deficiencv occurred in lying B etween the Kp Millamette and the Snake Rivers and central and southwestern Orem and in ortheastern Washington. The monthly. gems, as is usual, were highest along the coast, and lowest in the mountains of southeastern Itlaho and western MTyoming, ranging from 4 5 O at Newport, Oreg., to G.So at Moran, Wyo. Uniform temperatures, within a few degrees of the normal, pre- vailed during the fiist lialf of the month; during the latter half, moderately low temperatures occured over the entire district, esce t that portion along and near the Rocky corded during the last week. The mean temperature, as determined from the records of 358 stations, was 30.S0, which is 1.3' below the district average for December. The himliest temperature re- corded, 6 5 O , occurred at Bay d t y , Oreg., on the 2d; Asldand, Oreg., on the 3d; and at Newport, Oreg., on the 7th. The lowest, 27' below zero, occurred at Moran, Wyo., on the 19th. Mountains. w ?I iere abnormally -low temperatures were re- PRECIPITATION. There was less than the usual amount of precipitation over the district in general. Although a few scattering stations report an excess, there was no well-defined area over which the average was not below normal. The heaviest precipitation was along the coast and on the western slo )es of the Coast and Cascade Ranges in am1 the least occurred in south-central Oregon and southern Idaho. The precipitation was well distributed throughout the iiionth, the heaviest occurring as a rule about the 23d. A s determined from the records of 347 stations, the nrerage for the district was 3.11 inches, wluch is 1.33 inches below the noruin1 amount. The greatest ieci ita- tion for the month was 17.46 inches at c$uiniauE,' d h ., and the least was a trace nt Paisley, Oreg. The greatest amount recorded in 24 hours was 2.8s inches, on the 234 at Happy Home, Coos County, Oreg. Oregon, nncl t ! le Olympic Mountains in Washington, THE RIVERS. Mean stages on all streams were much below normal, ancl in nearly every case they averaged lower than in the precedin month. The $illarnette River at Portland has not averaged so low since December, 1890, December averages alone being coiisiclered. On nioht parts of the river the aver- ages for the month were 3 to 4 feet lower than the normal December stages. The highest water occurred on the last few clavs of the month. and the lowest durincr the the eastern part of the dktrict along the Rocky Moun- tains, some marked negative departures were noted in first week, {lie mean stage being about 1 foot lowerthan in November. The highest stage of the month a t the 1922 MONTHLY WEATHER REVIEW. DECEMBER, 1911 lower locks, Oregon City, was 11.9 feet, and the lowest 7 feet. The Columbia River continued to fall throughout the month. The mean stage was about 1 foot lower than in November, and at all points the sta es were much below waa 1.9 feet, and the lowest 0.0 foot. At Cascade Locks the highest stage waa 1.5 feet, and the lowest-0.3 foot. Maximum stages occurred on the lst, and minimum on the 31st. Water was somewhat lower than usual in the Snake River, but not so much so as in the Columbia. The water waa highest on the 18th and 19th, and lowest on the closing days of the month, the average stages being lower than m November. the December normal. At The Dal F es the highest water MIBCELLANEOUB PHENOMENA. High winds were reported during the holiday season thronghout the section. Stations equipped with record- ing instruments experienced maximum velocities ranging from 24 i d e s to 66 miles per hour. Dense fogs were quite frequent at Roseburg, S okane, North Head, were observed quite enerally, especially so during the mouth of the Columbia River and alon the Ore on coast near the close of the month. Sleet f8l at Waia Walla and Tatoosh, Wash., and also in a few localities south of tlie Columbia River, while hailstorms were confined to the southwestern part of the section. Seattle, Tacoma, and Portland. E unar and solar halos first week of the mont P 1. Thunderstorms occurred at the DEOEMBER, 191 1 . MONTHLY WEATHER REVIEW.
