April 11, 1357 Hr. J. Frederic Andrews Office of Admissions 166 BFiscom Hall Dear l-b. Andr~~t It is 8 great pleasure for me to support the appl.%cntion of Kitty Dubielsiff for a University of ir'iscorsin 13?7-% scholarship, 1!iss 9ubislzig first startid to work in our miarohial genetics lab last sprixq as hourly labor in routine dfshwashing to help defray her educational expenses, %e was soon given the more denrandfryz: job of medium prepsration as recognit?lon of her qualities of dexterity, neatness t;nd inciustriouwness. Since September 1956, she has served as my research assistant, sapidl~ learning the required bacteriolo@.cal techniques of sterile culture and working an average of ten hours weekly due to a heavy class load (and half to full tim in vacatfons). In this capacity in addition to the most meti- culous and skillful working habits, Miss Dubielzig d5splayed a ,surprising intellectual capacity fn grasp%% the theoretical hasis (beyorz! her present background, and in incleed that of many junior gmduete students) of the ex- pcriments In proqmu3. Xhile I was abroad lad month, ?!iss Dubielzig was able to continue parts of this I;!roblem smoothly and efficiently. Although I am unfamiliar with her formal academic record, I am i.mT~~!ssed with bhe deep interest she expms888 in her studios. She appars to bo an extremely stable and sound parson whose good qualities and efficicney are recognized and respected by all around her here. In spite of a busy and full day, she marines somehow to spare time for community activities, such as the Red Cros8. Of all the undergraduetes who have been working t&heir way through school 5,;. part-time work during the ton years that this lab kw kenn in operation, Fiss Dubielzig has been :&z-haps the most promising snd T rather suqect and hops that, with her gifts, she will go on to post graiiuate train- ing fur a successful research career in biology. Y3urs sincerely, Esther !", Lederberg Project Associate in tienetlcs P. s. T can enthusiastically second my uifels approbation of Riss Dubielzig. While she has worked more closely with Hrs. Lederberg, I knave seen c`nouph of her in the laboratory to be impressed by her out of t-he ordinary efficiency in her work, and her competence and En&rest in the theoretical side o+" what she was doing, Joshua Lederberg Professor of Genetics
