MEETINGS AT NIST

11/17 -- MONDAY

3:00 PM - SIGMA XI LECTURE: Interfacing the Physical and Biological Sciences: NIH/NIST Collaborative Projects
Introduction by Arden Bement, Ph.D., Director of NIST This mini-symposium will highlight four ongoing, collaborative efforts between NIH and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the areas of tissue engineering, single-molecule probes, oxidative DNA damage, and nano-bio-MEMS. With science becoming increasingly interdisciplinary and with the biosciences driving the twenty-first century economy, NIST is actively seeking collaboration and partnerships with NIH to address technological problems at the interface of the physical and biological sciences. A new NIH/NIST Joint Postdoc program has been established, joint workshops are planned and joint road mapping activities are underway to build a more formalized, strategic relationship between NIH and NIST in regions where the missions and focus areas of the two agencies intersect. Contact: Angela Hight Walker or Alan Cookson, 301-975-2220.

12:00 PM - NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL (NRC) POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATESHIPS: NRC Postdoctoral Research Associates Monthly "No-Host" Brown Bag Lunch, Nov 18, 12PM, 222/B212
Dr. Jack Hsia, NIST NRC Postdoctoral Research Associateships Program Representative, Office of International and Academic Affairs, Division 109, is sponsoring monthly "no-host" brown bag lunch gatherings for NRC postdoctoral research associates. All postdocs are invited, from those newly arrived and those who may be nearing the end of their tenure at NIST. The purpose of these lunches is for NRC postdocs at NIST to get to know each other. The next no-host brown bag lunch is scheduled for November 18, 2003, 12:00pm-1:00pm, in the Division 109 conference room, building 222, room B212. Future no-host brown bag lunches are scheduled for December 16, 2003, and January 20, 2004, same location as stated above. These no-host brown bag lunches are scheduled for the third Tuesday of each month.

11/25/03 3:00 PM - POLYMERS DIVISION,POLYMERS DIVISION SEMINAR: Nanomaterials From Ternary Copolymers: ABC Triblock Copolymers for the Preparation of Multicomponent Nanoparticle Arrays
Metallic nanoparticles are of great current interest for their novel electronic, magnetic, and chemical properties. Control over the arrangement of these particles in two and three dimensional space is expected to yield materials with interesting properties. While the arrangement of single species of nanoparticles can often be accomplished in a relatively direct fashion by allowing the particles to pack on a surface or assemble in solution, the arrangement of two or more species of nanoparticles in an ordered fashion is more difficult. Triblock copolymers have been designed to address the problem of arranging multiple sets of metallic nanoparticles into larger assemblies. ABC triblock copolymers of the general structure poly(2-vinylpyridine)-block-poly(styrene)-block-poly(alkyne-functional monomer), prepared through nitroxide-mediated living free radical polymerization, have been specifically designed with orthogonal functionality in the A and C blocks to allow incorporation of different metallic species for subsequent conversion to nanoparticles within the ordered domains of the self-assembled copolymer. The initial goal of these efforts is the preparation of ordered intermingled arrays of cobalt and gold nanoparticles within a triblock copolymer matrix with a cubic morphology. Preparation of these and related model diblock copolymers and preliminary examinations of structure and nanoparticle formation within polymer-nanoparticle composites will be discussed. Research into other ternary copolymer systems and novel initiators for living free radical polymerization will also be discussed.
Robert Grubbs , Professor, Dartmouth College.
