CLIMATOLOGICAL DATA FOR MAY, 1912.

GENERAL SUMMARY.
Seasonable conclitions prevailed in the northern ani1
western parts of tlie district. I n tlie southeastern sec-
tions warin and dry weather was quite general, but the
temperatures were iiot higher than they frequcntly are
in May, and the lack of tlic normal amount of rainfall
was not serious on account of copious precipitation enr-
lier in the pear. However, in almost every county of
Kansas and Nebraska the need of niore nioiqture waq
beinc. felt at the end of the month. There were very
few Tocal storms of cliiniaging strengtli, nltliougli on tlte
3cl there were tornadoes in southern Iinnsas, but so far
as known they were all to the soutli of tlie country
drained by the I<ansas and Osage Rivers, nnd were not
in the Missouri River draiimge areti. Frosts occurrecl in
almost all of the district, but there was none in tlic.

frosts or freezing weather, for vegetation was not suili-
cientlp advanced to suffer injury froni moderately low temperatures. Considering the coiiclit ions in tlic nggrc-

farming and all otlier outdoor pursuits.
TEMPERATURE.
On the 12th I% high-pressure area appeare(1 over the
nortli Rocky Mountain country niicl iiiovccl nlniost tlue
south; it appears to have been dissipated on tlie 15tl1,
but on the 12th, 13tl1, and 14th it sprea(1 enstward as
far as Kansas C!ity and wits nt tended by tlie coolebt
weatlier of the month. This was the only cool w:ivcb tlixt
covered a territory of consiclerable extent; in it tlic tcm-
peratures ranged from severitl degrees above the freezing
point dong the I<anscts-hlissouri line to readings in the
twenties in the niountniii States. There were, of coiir\e,
inany places in the extreme western or niountinous p:trt
of the district a t wliicli the temperatures fell t o points
lower t81ian 20°, and in C’oloraclo and Wyoming the mini-
mum a t some stations was very close to zero, but at each
of these places the elevation is very.grent or there is
some other topogrnpliical feature peculiarly favorable for the occurrence of low temperatures. In the valley below
Ihnsas City the 17th was the coolest day. Tlie witriiiest
clays were the L’2d and 23d in Missouri, tlie 26th in Ne- braska, Kansas, and western Iowa, and the 9th, 2Otli,
and 29th in the northern and western States. Every
State in the dist,rict with tlie exception of Wyoining hac1
temperatures of 90’ or higher, and Kansas ancl Nebra4a
each had one station with a record of looo on tlie 36th.
The average daily temperature was 2 O to 4’ above tlie
normal in Missouri, I<ansas, western Iowa, ant1 ea\tern
and central Nebraska. I n the other States of the clis-
trict t,lie departure from the nornictl was not uniformly in
one direction. However, a t most of the stations in tlie
Dakotas tlie niontlily mean was slightly higher than it
usually is in May, and in hlontanu, IVj-oming, ttnd C‘olo-
rndo i t was sliglitly lower.

greatest raiiifdl for tlie niontli, 7.04 inches, occurred a t
Eskriclge, Iians., while the greatest fall in 24 consecutive
hours was 4.90 inches at, Grant C’ity, hro. There was
1mictically no snow to tlie east of tlie mountain ani1 foot-

RIVERS.

Tlie Osage River in Missouri, wliicli was in flood clur-
ing tlie clo.;ing days of April, subsided rapidly during the
first p w t of May; the claiiinge was immaterial.
I n the remainder of the hlissouri River drainage area

TORNADOES I N CENTRAL NEBRASKA I N APRIL, 1912.
I n the ,4pril, 1912, Review niention was iiiade of torna-
does in Central Nebraska on April 25. From reports of
these storms since received it, ztppears that between
hlabon C’ity ant1 h i s k y , in sout1ieast)ern C‘uster County,
tt schoolhouse, severnl other buil(lingq, wagons, farm
macliinery, and fences were wrecked. About L’O persons,
mostly tlie cliiltlren wlio were in the schoolhouse, were
injurecl-2 of tlieni quite seriously-but there were no
deaths. Aiiotlier storm occurred near North Loup, in
southeastern T’itlley C’ounty, about 3.5 i d e s to tlie north-
east of the scene of the Mason City-Ansley storm. Here
there seemed to be two storms running ptxrtillel, about
one-quarter of n mile txpart. Buildings were claniaged,
some destroyed, and a Union Pacific train was over-
turned, three of the coaches being badly claniaged. There
wits no loss of life, but about 30 people, all passengers on
tlie truin, were injured.
