Postdoc Association: Conversion Committee

CONTACTS

Conversion Committee

The Conversion Committee works to demystify the postdoc to Technical Staff Member (TSM) conversion process through the collective experiences of postdocs, recently converted postdocs, TSMs, and Management.

Tasks

  1. Identify recently converted TSMs who would provide a 1 or 2 page description of their experience and/or be willing to give a short presentation.
    • Talks could be in roundtable or individual format, depending on background of speakers (similar divisions, groups, administrators, etc).
    • 1-2 page summaries will be compiled into a pamphlet that will be included in postdoc new hire packages.
  2. Gather statistics regarding conversion (will work with Mary Anne on this).
    • % of postdocs converted vs. group, division, % foreign nationals, % desired conversion, etc.
    • Identify areas of LANL interested in converting postdocs, both currently (last 1 year) and historically (3yr, 5yr, etc.)
  3. Gather input from division/group leaders as to what is desired in a conversion applicant. Perhaps an endorsement email from Anastasio could help with motivation.

Notes

  • Possibly another committee should be developed to help with career development for future employment outside the lab. (To be addressed in the Policy Committee).
  • A semi-formal method to gracefully change postdoc assignments/mentors within a few months of starting at LANL could be useful for postdocs that find their first choice is not a perfect fit.
  • This committee may become an avenue to interface with the division and directorate administration.
  • Sell a book of postdoc resumes to companies.
