Capps Faults President’s Plan To Militarize Borders

Criticizes Plan for Being Unrealistic, Repeats Calls for Comprehensive Reform

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today Congresswoman Capps criticized President Bush’s plan to militarize U.S. borders as being unrealistic and burdensome for the National Guard.

Congresswoman Capps’ Statement on President Bush’ Proposal To Militarize U.S. Borders:

“Securing our borders is a serious task and has to be the first step in comprehensive immigration reform.  Unfortunately, the President’s plan to militarize our border is just not a realistic approach.

“Along with the rest of the military, the National Guard is already way overstretched by its duties in Iraq, Afghanistan and other hotspots.  And we all still expect – and need – the Guard to be ready and available when emergencies like Hurricanes or earthquakes occur here in the U.S.  The members of the Guard have gone above and beyond the call of duty over the last few years.  We should thank them for their dedication and service, not force them to take on yet another mission.

“In addition, we already have someone to take on this task – the Border Patrol.  Unfortunately, Congress and the Administration have not heeded the call of the 9-11 Commission and added enough new agents and detention facilities.  I hope that this heightened attention to border security will change that glaring shortfall.”
