Scary PubMed Training

The Making PubMed Work for You workshop was held on October 31st, Halloween, at the King/Drew Health Sciences Library in Los Angeles. A change in location to Drew occurred at the last hour figuratively speaking. The King/Drew facility had a Smart Board or interactive whiteboard, which was a fun experience for the instructor, Kay Deeney. Instead of using a mouse and keyboard to navigate to parts of PubMed, with an interactive whiteboard, Kay just touched or tapped parts of the screen—as though she was a human mouse!

The class was exposed to an overview of the PubMed system and exercises utilizing the features of PubMed in order to search effectively. Sixteen library staff and nurses participated. Attendees commented favorably about the class and one said, “The Smart Board really helps for learning!”

The impetus for the class came from Judy Kraemer and Karen Vogel and some other Long Beach librarians. The staff at the NN/LM Pacific Southwest Region would like to thank John Carney, Linda Towles, and Janet Palacio of Drew University of Medicine and Science for their help in arranging for the class.

Your RML staff is available to teach classes and workshops highlighting NLM and NN/LM databases and services to groups. While we don’t teach classes for the staff at a single institution, if a group of librarians or health professionals in a locale want to request training, we are available.

In order for us to teach at a location, your institution or organization needs to provide the following:

  • a computer lab with individual workstations for 1-2 attendees each
  • an instructor workstation
  • a minimum of 10 attendees

If you would like to make arrangements or if you have any questions, please contact Kay Deeney, NN/LM PSR Education Coordinator.
