This
story is told by Elmer Sharp :
Dale,
Tom, Steve, Eun and I were headed to work on board
the usual 7:30 shuttle. We had just picked up a
general assistant (GA), Stephana, so she could ride
out to Willy Field with us and then drive the shuttle
back into town to pick up some more people. We're
going along at a steady 20 miles per hour and then,
all of the sudden, everyone felt the van pick up
speed. Stephana jumped out the side of the van and
started rolling down the hill. The guy next to the
driver was out next. I realized that I couldn't
get out because I was sitting in the back. Finally
with the brakes still locked up, we hit a snow drift
and stopped. We ended up stopping about 5 feet from
the edge of a cliff!
Another
truck was soon to follow, so they radioed back for
someone to come and tow us out. Within ten minutes,
3 different vehicles were out there scraping the
roads and getting us out. As soon as we were out.
The van started forward again down the hill, this
time with only the driver. It slid down the hill
again another 30 feet until it came to rest about
4 inches from a bulldozer. Finally with everyone
of foot, the driver followed the bulldozer down
to the bottom of the hill. We all jumped in after
regaining our breath and took off again for Willy
Field. Everyone seemed a bit shaken up but ok. Even
the GA, after her amazing Hollywood stunt turned
out all right.
It
was a real ride, nothing like the early morning
commute in DC.
