Director’s Colloquium explores India’s Fast Reactor program

The present status of India’s nuclear energy program, and the roadmap for the future is the subject of a Director’s Colloquium Tuesday by distinguished scientist Baldev Raj.

Raj will provide an overview of India’s program in his talk entitled “A Perspective on the Fast Reactor Program in India.” The unclassified talk begins at 1:10 p.m., in the Physics Building Auditorium and is open to Laboratory badge holders.

India is on a rapid growth path and it is vital to step up the production of energy to meet the increasing needs of industrialization, electrification of all its villages and other sectors. Nuclear energy is a major part of the planned solution and India is keen to develop its thorium resources by developing breeder reactor technology.

Raj is director of the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Department of Atomic Energy in India. He is a member of the Indian National Science Academy as well as the Indian National Academy of Engineering. He received a bachelor’s degree from Ravishankar University, a doctoral degree from the Indian Institute of Science, and a doctor of science degree from Sathyabama Deemed University.

There are more than 650 publications, thirty-eight books, and special volumes of journals in which Raj has authored or co-authored. He has five Indian Standards and seventeen patents to his credit. He also has received many awards, including the National Metallurgist Award (1986), Lifetime Achievement Award of Indian Society for Nondestructive Testing (2004), and the International Researcher Award of International Committee on (2000-2004).

Raj’s talk also will be shown on LABNET Channel 9 and on desktop computers using Real Media Stream or IPTV technology.
