Coincidence: 0037Z(693 km), 1659Z(742 km), 1835Z(185 km), 2012Z(613 km), 2149Z(460 km), 2325Z(243 km) QC notes: 0151Z: CAE speck. ----> Corrected. 2B !!FLAG!! 0320Z, 0340-0350Z, 0409Z: Possible CAE patches to NW & W, but there's also precip echoes in 2nd tilt in this region. Therefore, cannot fully rule out that the patches are light precip. Echoes left in, but period flagged as minor problem due to uncertainty. RANGE: ~130-150 km. 0430-0500Z, 0524Z, 0539Z, 0559Z: Most likely CAE patches. 2nd tilt shows some light precip echoes, but they don't seem to be near echoes in first tilt that remain in first-pass CZ. Thus, echoes will be removed. ----> Corrected. 2B !!FLAG!! 1254-1304Z: CAE to NW? Appears to be, but not entirely certain. Removed echoes, but flagging as minor problem due to uncertainty. 1324-1635Z: CAE to NW? Same situation as previous period, although there is probably a mixture of CAE and precip in many of these VOSs. Mostly CAE to SE. 1B, 2B !!FLAG!! ----> Partial corrections made, but still some CAE scattered about. RANGE: Scattered mostly between 100-150 km. 1640-2055Z: Mixture of CAE and developing light precip. 1B, 2B !!FLAG!! ----> Same as previous period...some corrections made, but some light, scattered CAE remains. RANGE: Scattered mostly between 100-150 km. 1B, 2B !!FLAG!! 2100-2216Z: Possibly some CAE to E, as some light echoes do not display good time continuity. Questionable echoes left intact, though, since there are a few legitimate 2nd tilt echoes in this region, and moving QC params to remove the small, light questionable echoes may harm broken line of light precip. Flagged as minor problem due to uncertainty. RANGE: Scattered mostly between 100-150 km. % of data reprocessed: 102/254 = 40% ******************************************************************************* 03 Apr 99: Scattered light precip for much of the day, often combined with intense AP and/or sea clutter(?). A few convective cells form to NW after 18Z, then an intense convective cluster develops near 1930Z to WNW and moves to the NE for rest of the day. Possible mesocyclone near 2200Z in an intense cell near 100 km range to the NNW. Good TRMM overpass near 2213Z. Data processed: 0001-2350Z Sat. Also some intense AP to ENE embedded in light precip near 03-05Z. Meanwhile, very light precip echoes almost constantly move in from SW to NE...echoes very prominent in 2nd tilt, but not as much in 1st tilt. More embedded AP to SW between 06-08Z. Very difficult QC situation. 2A, 2B !!FLAG!! ----> Intense, embedded AP impossible to remove, while many light spurious echo specks remain. Situation is improved &/or corrected in many VOSs, but problems remain. RANGE: All spurious echo generally between 100-150 km, although a few VOSs are contaminated near 75 km. 1410-2131Z: Some light CAE/sea clutter probably combined with &/or near precip, mostly in SE quadrant. 1B, 2B !!FLAG!! ----> Period is improved, but it's all flagged as a minor problem since it's often difficult to distinguish between real and false light echo...rainmaps probably aren't greatly affected. Most likely some false echo surrounding precip cores, but difficult to distinguish exactly what is real versus false. Keeping VOSs as is and flagging period as a minor problem. RANGE: 0239-0404Z: CAE to W & NW located away from precip. 2A, 2B !!FLAG!! ----> Much improved away from radar, but still may be CAE surrounding precip cores near radar, similar to previous period. RANGE: 0409-0440Z: CAE & intense AP to NW and W + precip. ----> Corrected, except for: 2A !!FLAG!! ====> 0435-0440Z: Intense AP diminshed greatly but still a small sliver w/in 150 km at 0435Z and a small patch at 0440Z. Much better than defaults, though. 0445-0851Z: Scattered light CAE + precip. ----> Corrected. 0911-0921Z: A few light CAE specks + light precip. ----> Corrected. 1502-1540Z: Some CAE in 2nd tilt. 2B !!FLAG!! ----> Improved, but not perfect. Very minor problem since echo is so light. 1545-1755Z: Spurious echo patches to SE? Difficult to tell. CAE also in 2nd tilt to SE. 2A !!FLAG!! ----> Corrected except for embedded clutter specks to NW between 1634-1649Z and 1700-1710Z. RANGE: Clutter specks near 50 km. 2016-2107Z: Light, small false echo to ENE. 1B, 2B !!FLAG!! ----> Small, light specks kept in and period flagged as a minor problem, since removing specks also removed small pockets of precip. 1B, 2B !!FLAG!! 2137-2352Z: Perhaps some light false echo to in NW quadrant. Could be all light precip, but difficult to distinguish. May just be boundary layer features and not accumulating precip. Very difficult to distinguish what's precipitating precip vs. CAE along boundary as it moves to E. 1B, 2A, 2B !!FLAG!! ----> Increased params to remove some obvious CAE before 18Z, but still a degree of uncertainty as to what's legitimate precip and what's clear-air echo due to the obvious boundary moving through the radar scope. After 18Z, didn't change defaults...just left as is and flagged whole period for problems. The major flag applies to some questionable echo to W before 1630Z that may just be moderately intense CAE. 2301-2352Z: AP along boundary? ----> Removed all echo during this time period. Echo appears to transition into AP...very radially aligned, little vertical continuity, it's located right behind boundary's leading edge, and velocities are mostly zero w/in the questionable echo. Looked at images from the next day, and it appears even more AP-like in later hours. % of data reprocessed: 100/230 = 43% ******************************************************************************* 06 Apr 99: No distinguishable precipitation. Very minor problem, especially when compared to original first-pass processing. 1147Z: CAE specks to NW. ----> Corrected. 1258-1353Z: CAE to NW + small showers to SE and light showers to NW. 2B !!FLAG!! ----> Improvements made w/ CAE, but still some remnants of it surrounding light precip. 1554-2005Z: CAE + precip. 2A, 2B !!FLAG!! ----> Some improvements, but still could be CAE combined w/ precip. Flagged as a minor problem before 19Z. There may be some moderate CAE near precip or embedded w/in it after 19Z (SE quadrant). 2010-2311Z: Interesting combination of problems. CAE still hanging around, mostly in SE quadrant. AP embedded in precip to W and SW from 2010- 2035Z, then transitioning into widespread AP embedded and outside precip shield through 2135Z. Clutter filter seems to be employed after 2126Z. Appear to be holes in precip to W/NW of radar between 21-22Z not related to QC algorithm (i.e. holes appear in DZ, too). More embedded AP to NE near 2215Z, plus intense clutter specks to NW & W. To make matters worse, QC algorithm defaults remove legitimate precip beginning near 2220Z. This is an ugly concoction of events that makes QC for this period very miserable. 2A !!FLAG!! ----> AP near 2100Z impossible to remove since there's echo above it in the second tilt. Very major problems with this period. 2316-2356Z: Holes in precip created by defaults params. ----> Corrected. % of data reprocessed: 194/279 = 70% ******************************************************************************* 27 Apr 99: Stratiform from convective system on 26 April moves out of scope by 02Z.
