Methodology


Collier:

The data set for Collier County soils was created by scanning the 8 individual soils maps included in the Soil Survey Detailed Reconnaissance issued in March 1954 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service in cooperation with the Florida Agricultural Experiment Station. The maps are at 1:40,000 scale and each covered 30 minutes of longitude by 15 minutes of latitude.

The maps were scanned using an Ideal 48 inch pinch roller scanner at a resolution of 400 pixels per inch (ppi) and 24-bit color. The files were resampled to 200 ppi using Adobe Photoshop and 8-bit color. Using the "Paint Brush" or "Pens" tools a color swatch in an easily distinguishable and contrasting color from the majority of colors in the scanned image.was created. This 200 ppi 8-bit color "Indexed Color" image was saved to a new file. Most of the polygons in the scanned image are surrounded by black so this color that needs to be distinguishable from all the others. Any gray pixels that should have been black also were converted at this time. All the black linework and text were selected and changed to the contrasting color and saved as a 200 ppi 8-bit color image. The contrasting color image was "pasted" over the indexed color image. The next step was to edit elements that were not to be vectorized and create a vectorized file.

Miami-Dade:

Methodology: The data set for Mimai-Dade County soils was created by scanning the 12 individual soils maps included in the Soil Survey Detailed Reconnaissance issued in April 1958 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service in cooperation with the Florida Agricultural Experiment Station. The maps are at 1:40,000 scale and each covered 30 minutes of longitude by 15 minutes of latitude.
