Minutes of the Dec 19, 2003 Tevatron Dept Meeting 1. Dave McGinnis passed a word from the Lab abd Division management on how they are pleased with CDF IP move and startup progress after shutdown. 2. Andreas on Tev operation: since last Fri we moved CDF LB quads, cooled Tev down, found out how to live without D46 spool (which has two dipoles and one skew corrector), fully recovered after 1 week shutdown, slightly adjusted abort kicker timing, put in store #3101 with L=28e30 Wed and record store #3103 Thur with L=49.92e30 with decent lumi lifetime of 10.8 hrs and effective emittance of about 20pi (from FBI). At the end of #3101 we tested A48 collimator (but it's still not in operation) and did separator scan at IP (few % gain). Also pointed to unusual Schottky spectra at LB - there is a broad peak at Q_x=0.6 which disappears at the EoS. 3. Mike Martens summarized CDF LB quad moves: IP went down from Y=+5.7mm to 1.5mm (SVTGY), vert angle at IP changed from about 260 urad to about 100urad - in good agreement with predicted change of -3.7 mm and -220urad (discrepancies can be attributed to some 5-10 mils survey and alignment errors). Beam position in BPMs changes are exactly as expected (about -4.6 mm at BQ4=B0DN). New dipole corrector settings were predicted well so vertical orbit after the move has changed by <1mm in the arcs. 4. Stephen Wolbers summarized BPM review (Wed. Dec.16): it was recommended to go after modified Echotek cards for signal processing, by Feb'04 a prototype card should demonstrate that it can measure proton closed orbit and turn-by-turn position within BPM requirements; the entire BPM system upgrade to be completed by Oct. 1, 2004. 5. Alvin presented conclusions of the magnet measurements mini-review last Wed: a) nice data from MTF on B2 - Tev will incorporate recommendations in operation (fix backporch time, fix snapback algorithm, etc); b) at MTF: continue b2 measurements with fixed backporch time, start (a,b)_1 measurements ASAP; c) do not proceed with on-line B-field measurement system; d) B-fluctuation measurements need scientific insight (i.e grad student); e) Tev is asked to look into magnet T effect(s). 6. C.Y.Tan outlined status of "tunetracker" project: goal is fast and precise p/pbar tune measurements on ramp and squeeze; software and hardware is in good shape (designed, some cards in fabrication); help from IIT expected (master or grad student); need to do more simulation work (e.g,. effects of coupling and chromaticity - with Alexei Burov); expect real beam test sometime in Mar'04. 7. Vahid on "chromaticity from head-tail" project: progress with software development (Z11 page, contributions from Aimin and Eugene Lorman); over next few weeks they will test signal processing at injection, after that will start tests with pingers (which will kick the beam by some 0.3 mm or so). 8. Andreas on IPM status: goal is to measure fast beam size variations at injection and on ramp; significant contribution from PPD - DAQ cards and DSP designs; mechanical design started, PO placed for magnet fabrication; magnets will be ready in May'04.
