Abstract (AB): This textbook presents a comprehensive review of the clinical management of individuals with phonological disorders. Chapter 1 reviews normal aspects of articulation and provides an introduction to the phonological system of American English. Chapters 2 and 3 focus on normal phonological acquisition in children and review the process through which children develop production and perceptual skills at both the prelinguistic and linguistic levels. Chapter 4 reviews the multicultural nature of American society and addresses language and dialectal variations, including those of Spanish, Asian, and Native American languages. Chapter 5 reviews factors related to the development of normal and disordered phonology, including a review of cognitive-linguistic as well as psychosocial factors and how they relate to phonological disorders. Chapter 6 is concerned with procedures for obtaining speech samples from which to assess phonological behavior, including the assessment battery, screening measures, and speech discrimination (perception measures). Chapter 7 deals with determining the need for intervention by examining such factors as intelligibility, severity, stimulability, error patterns, and developmental considerations. Chapter 8 is a lengthy chapter dealing with the remediation of phonological disorders, including basic treatment considerations, motor-based approaches to intervention, and linguistic-based approaches. The chapter also contains a section dealing with children with developmental verbal dyspraxia and a discussion of phonological awareness. Each chapter includes references; author and subject indices conclude the text.

Abstract (AB): This fact sheet provides detailed information on benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), which causes dizziness due to debris that has collected within a part of the inner ear. Topics covered include the symptoms of BPPV; the causes of BPPV, including head trauma, viral infection, and Ménière's disease; diagnostic considerations; the office treatment of BPPV, including the Semont maneuver and the Epley maneuver; post-procedure instructions for patients; home treatment using Brandt-Daroff exercises, including a recommended schedule; the surgical treatment of BPPV; and the impact of BPPV on one's daily life. The fact sheet lists physicians in various regions of the U.S. (as well as one in Canada and two in France) who are known for treating BPPV. 2 figures. 11 references.

Title (TI): Memory Impairments Underlying Language Difficulties in Dementia.
Author(s) (AU): Azuma, T.; Bayles, K.A.
Source (SO): Topics in Language Disorders. 18(1): 58-71. November 1997.
Abstract (AB): An important defining feature of dementia is memory impairment, a progressive deficit that also affects patients' ability to use and comprehend language. In this article, the memory deficits associated with the dementia syndromes of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Lewy body disease are outlined and related to the language impairments that have been observed in patients with these disorders. The impact of dementia on communicative abilities ranges from relatively subtle word-finding difficulties in the early stages to profoundly impaired language in the later stages. Individuals with dementia display progressive impairments in semantic, episodic, and lexical memory. The authors describe assessment techniques, including commonly used individual tests and test batteries that assess the memory and language of patients with dementia. The authors propose specific strategies for facilitating language in patients with dementia, based on the pattern of spared and impaired memory functions. The most effective strategies for facilitating language comprehension and production in patients with dementia are those that minimize attentional, working, and declarative memory demands. 1 table. 71 references.
