Evaluation of clinical features between HIV infected intravenous drug users (IVDA) and homosexual men.

Bunikowski R, Fitzek C, Trautmann M; International Conference on AIDS.

Int Conf AIDS. 1992 Jul 19-24; 8: 60 (abstract no. PuB 7071).

Freie Universitat Berlin, Federal Republic of Germany.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical process of HIV-manifestation and HIV unconnected disease in the two main risk groups IVDA and homosexual men (homo) having been treated in a clinic of Infection Diseases in West-Berlin, we proceeded to stratified data analysis of the early epidemic (1982-1989), because the data of this time were not influenced by pneumocystis-carinii-pneumonia (PCP) prophylaxis. METHODS: In a retrospective cross section study the two mainly affected groups were analyzed according to their disease stage (CDC). HIV specific differences within the individual disease stages of the patients as well as HIV unconnected factors were examined. The statistical significance was verified by the chi square test. RESULTS: The mean age of the 76 homosexuals were 37.5 years compared to 28 years for IVDA. The median observation time was 18 months for the homosexuals (range 2-64) and 13 months (range 2-67) for the IVDA. HIV-related and AIDS diagnosis differ significantly in the two groups. The following diseases were found more frequently in homosexuals: TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. CONCLUSION: The analyses show clearly that the spectrum of HIV-associated diseases and HIV-connected diseases was significantly different in the two main risk groups. A risk-oriented preventive prophylaxis of HIV-related diseases and other infections is therefore required for each of these groups. *Non-specific pneumonia of bacterial etiology or due to unknown organisms.
