Flies (Order Diptera)
Next to beetles, the flies are one of the largest orders of insects. Most all fly families are economically and environmentally important, ranging from agricultural pests to important aquatic and terrestrial food sources for predators. There are other unrelated orders of insects that are referred to as "flies," such as craneflies, dragonflies, and caddisflies. The dipterans, or true flies, are distinguished by having only one pair of wings. Their hind wings have evolved into knobby structures called "halteres." The halter is used as a counter-weight that gives flies their great manueverability.
