38.2. Server discovery Server discovery is a mechanism by which servers can broadcast their connection settings across the network. This is useful for two purposes: Discovery by messaging clients. A messaging client wants to be able to connect to the servers of the cluster without having specific knowledge of which servers in the cluster are up at any one time. Messaging clients can be initialised with an explicit list of the servers in a cluster, but this is not flexible or maintainable as servers are added or removed from the cluster. Discovery by other servers. Servers in a cluster want to be able to create cluster connections to each other without having prior knowledge of all the other servers in the cluster. Server discovery uses UDP multicast to broadcast server connection settings. If UDP is disabled on your network you won't be able to use this, and will have to specify servers explicitly when setting up a cluster or using a messaging client.
