The process of getting patches is the same as getting the code itself. Using the Red Hat Customer Portal (http://access.redhat.com) you gain access to code and patches. Once you have identified the patches you need, you download them to your system. Once downloaded, you can apply them to your system. Refer to Illustration 1 showing the main page for the customer portal. Besides downloads of software, the customer portal offers a wide array of additional functionality such as knowledge base, support and more. It's a good idea to refer to the customer portal on a regular basis to be up to date on new releases, patches and known issues you should be familiar with. For this guide, please click on Downloads (see Illustration 2). Be sure to select the download for JBoss Enterprise Middleware. If you are this point have not logged in, you'll be prompted for your username and password for the customer portal. Please see your Red Hat portal administrator if you do not have a username. Every organization can setup multiple users for the same entitlements allowing whole teams to access the customer portal. It is a requirement to have active entitlements to get access to the customer portal. Illustration 2: Download Section of the Customer Portal The next step is login (see Illustration 3). Illustration 3: Customer Portal Login Once logged in, select “Application Platform” as the software type (see Illustration 4). This is the category for EAP and the same category choosen when EAP was initially downloaded. The default version is always the latest. If you're not on this version, be sure to pick the right version before continuing. After a few seconds, the screen will update and show 3 tabs: Releases, Patches and Security (Illustration). The default list is Releases which is where the full software packages can be found. Patches contains all the available patches for bugfixes and new features and finally the Security tab contains the patches for known security issues – these are the high-priority patches that should be applied immediately. For this guide, we'll download the Security patch CVE-2010-4476 and apply it. First, click on the NAME of the file (not the link saying “Download”). This brings you to an important page with details about the patch (see Illustration). Several pieces of important information should be noticed: Illustration 4: Patches Download Screen Product/Version describes the version this patch applies to. Make sure it matches the version you're running. File Name is the name of the file you're downloading SHA-256 is the CRC value to verify the file after download (see below) Last Updated should be compared to the time you applied the patch. If the patch is modified after you have downloaded and applied it, you'll need to repeat the process. Manual Instructions – important application instructions. Follow these instructions carefully when applying a patch. It's recommended to create a directory to keep all patches in and to maintain a file indicating when each patch was applied to what installation. Using the JBoss software owner's $HOME/Downloads directory is a recommended location for the patches. Downloading the patch Click the “Download” link just above the Download Details section header. The download is a standard HTTP based download and should not cause any firewall issues. Depending on your download speed the patch will be available shortly. Security patches are usually very small – however patches can be of any size. Be sure to wait till the whole patch has downloaded before continuing.
