The Feature phone rises (again?)
Junko Yoshida for the EE Times opines that the market is primed for the emergence of the low-end smartphone and that FFOS could be the mobile OS to usher in a new market - "entry-level" smartphones that virtually anyone can afford.

Quote:

Assume that I'm a feature phone supplier eager to get on the smartphone bandwagon. If I change the OS, and make sure my new feature phone runs a few apps, I could, in theory, call my feature phone an entry-level smartphone. All I need do is keep the system-level cost down - a CPU, apps processor, graphics, memory footprint, OS, display, all included. That's where Firefox OS comes in - in my opinion."

Will Firefox OS be dead on arrival?
Sebastian Anthony (Mr. Seb) wrote an article for IT ProPortal entitled, Will Firefox OS be dead on arrival?". In the article he argues that while the OS might be a good idea in theory, there is already too much competition within the mobile OS space for FFOS to be successful.

Quote:

"As an idealistic thought experiment, the truly open Firefox OS (formerly Boot to Gecko) is captivating - but in reality, as it prepares to enter one of the world's most fiercely competitive markets, its chance of success is close to nil."

Picture of the Month

Mozilla helped to launch the Internet Defense League this week; the launch coincided with the release of the new Batman movie. As part of the launch, the IDL hosted parties in several cities (including one at the Mozilla SF office), during which the IDL projected the organization's "cat signal" on tall buildings, a la the famous bat signal in the Batman movies. In the photo above, the Cat Signal shines from Mozilla SF's rooftop deck.

Cody Brocious demonstrates his hotel room key card hack at Black Hat 2012, using an Arduino microcontroller
Mozilla software developer Cody Brocious gave an independent presentation at the Black Hat security conference demonstrating how to open a hotel lock from the manufacturer Onity in a matter of seconds. Brocious built an open-source tool with a plug that can be inserted into a DC power port of a hotel lock. Says eWeek, "What Brocious is hoping to achieve from this disclosure is not a mass string of hackers getting unauthorized access to hotel rooms, but rather some kind of fix and industry response."

Will Firefox OS be dead on arrival?
Summary Coverage focused on how Mozilla will leverage HTLM5 technology to bring a new option to the mobile platform market, competing with dominate players Android and Apple iOS. Positive articles have noted the move as an extension of Mozilla's commitment to open source standards into mobile, and several publications cite the move to rebrand the Boot to Gecko project as "Firefox OS" as a strategic one - noting the power of a recognizable brand name.
While most articles have focused on Mozilla's entrance into the mobile OS arena as a potential game-changer to be monitored, a handful of publications have reported the announcement from a less favorable standpoint. Outlets such as eWEEK and BetaNews view Firefox OS as facing serious headwinds as it enters an already crowded market - frequently citing Android as an open-source platform that already targets the low-end consumer space.

But Mozilla is doubling down on the Web. The named reference to Mozilla's biggest brand is purposeful. Much as the Firefox browser targeted Internet Explorer, so Firefox OS is a major project meant to disrupt the existing smartphone leaders." - AllThingsD

"Mozilla's browser-based smartphone operating system has grown up a notch, winning over partners such as Sprint and ZTE and picking up the marketing-friendly name of Firefox OS." - CNET

"The idea has been simmering for some time, and there have even been workable prototypes. But by establishing a launch window and signing up some serious partners, Mozilla has indicated that the new OS is no longer just a hobby." - MSNBC

"Its open vision of the mobile phone and mobile web landscapes might become real assets, knowing that Mozilla sees beyond the current generation of connected devices and imagine the Web as a platform on its own." - PC World France

"With Firefox OS, Mozilla aims to provide a fully open source and free mobile platform that's completely powered by HTML5. The first Firefox OS devices will hit Brazil in early 2013 through Telefonica's Vivo brand — a decent market to start with, since Mozilla is targeting entry-level devices with the platform." - VentureBeat
