How do I turn on this hidden preference I’ve heard about?

In addition to the preferences found under Edit | Preferences (Mac OS X: Mozilla | Preferences), the advanced user has fine control over a tremendous number of Mozilla parameters. To access and modify these advanced preferences, enter about:config in the Location Bar.

Improper configuration may cause Mozilla to malfunction. Your preferences are stored in file prefs.js in your profile. Be sure to back up this file before you use about:config. Also read Customizing Mozilla, Hidden Mail Compose Prefs and Hidden Address Book Prefs.

You may also use the MozTweak or Preferential extension for a more user-friendly interface.

How do I use different icons for each Mozilla component?

You can get icon packs and instructions on installing them at iconpacks.mozdev.org.

How do I change the splash screen at startup?

On Windows, the splash screen is a bitmap image (Windows .bmp format). To use another image, save it as mozilla.bmp into the same directory as mozilla.exe. You can use an image of any size.

Changing the splash screen in Macintosh or Unix/Linux currently requires recompiling Mozilla with the new splash screen included.

Can I get a smaller toolbar with no text/picture?

You can turn off text or pictures on toolbar buttons. Open the Edit menu (Mozilla on Mac OS) and choose Preferences. In the Appearance catagory, set the toolbar button style you want.

Can I move the toolbars around?

This is not implemented in Mozilla. Currently, you can switch toolbars on and off (open the View menu and choose Show/Hide).

How do I change the location of my bookmarks file?

Open the Bookmarks Manger (Ctrl+B, or Cmd+B on Mac OS). Open the File menu, select Open Bookmark File, and pick your bookmarks file.

Can I use macros/browser scripts in Mozilla?

You can enhance your browser with JavaScript bookmarks, or bookmarklets. Bookmarklets are small code that perform tasks such as translationd, text highlighting, sorting table, and changing web page styles. To install a bookmarklet, simply drag it to your personal toolbar. To run a script on the page you are viewing, click its bookmarklet.

Bookmarklets are generally safe.

Where can I get add-ons for Mozilla functionality?

Go to Mozilla Update for a list of extensions you can use.

I tried to install a Mozilla add-on (.xpi) directly from a Web page, but clicking the ‘Install’ link didn’t work.

Open the Edit menu (Mozilla on Mac OS X) and choose Preferences. Switch on both JavaScript (in Advanced | Scripts & Windows) and Software Installation (in Advanced | Software Installation).

If it still doesn’t work, try downloading the XPI and installing it directly.

I have downloaded a Mozilla add-on (.xpi) file, but can’t figure out how to install it.

Check that Software Installation is enabled, then open the file in Mozilla by dragging it to the browser window (or open the File menu and choose Open File in Mozilla)

How do I uninstall an extension?

To remove individual extensions, use the ExtensionUninstaller extension.

To manually remove all extensions, first uninstall Mozilla. Then, in the chrome directory in your profile, delete all extension files and the chrome.rdf file. Finally, reinstall Mozilla.

How do I use RoboForm on Mozilla?

Mozilla includes a Form Manager and a Password Manager which can save and fill your form data and log-in information automatically. These tools can be accessed from the Tools menu. Mozilla also has a Master Password feature that let you control form and password auto-fill with one single password.

You can also use RoboForm in Mozilla using the RoboForm Adapter.

How do I search from the Location Bar?

Enter the search string in the Location Bar. A popup menu should appear, with the last item reading Search search_engine for "search_word", where search_engine is your default search engine. Click the item to search.

You can also set Mozilla to perform keywords search (by default, Google search) when you press Enter/Return. Open the Edit menu (Mozilla menu on Mac OS) and choose Preferences. Under the Navigator catagory, choose Smart Browsing. Check Enable Internet Keywords and click OK.

You may also search from the Sidebar’s (F9) Search tab. If you do not see a Search tab, click the Tabs button and choose Search.

How do I add/change my search engines?

With a search plug-in you can access a searchengine either from your Sidebar or from your Location Bar, without having to access the engine´s page first. You can find search engines and instructions on how to install them on the mycroft project or visit Easy Search

Can I have more than one keyword search engines?

If you have Internet Keywords enabled, you can enter search text and press Enter/Return in the Location Bar to load the default keyword engine (Google).

You may set up custom keywords to use multiple keyword search engines (for example, enter dict reverberate to look up the word reverberate in dictionary.com). For more information, see Bookmark Keywords.
