fantasaiHixie: ping
moogle that tmpfs stuff shouldn't matter as much given your OS will just make efficient use of its buffer cache for commonly-accessed resources, ne?
gisburnthinks about adding a "Optimizing the Solaris environment for building Mozilla5" section to the Solaris build pages at www.mozilla.org... :-)

gisburnimoT: Wrong. Best resulting code should count more than fast compiling... :-)
gisburnimoT: But if you like it fast...
gisburn imoT: Try to tune your machine... Solaris comes with tons of accountint/profiling stuff - and the kernel can be tuned to hell and back... :-)

imoTgisburn: actually i think 6.0 is only option.. it works with workshop
|<--illsleydc has left moznet (Ping timeout: 180 seconds)
gisburn imoT: Workshop 6 Update 1 or (better) update 2 are faster... little bit - but you can saee a noticeable difference when building large projects (=Mozilla) ...

gisburnis tired... needs sleep... much...

gisburnimoT: Email me... I can post you some usefull tuning info for your box... :-)
jmkganyone know how to reset a parallel port under Linux?
imoTgisburn: it comes to quite general usage..
jmkgother than rebooting
-->|redfive (jgaunt@h-208-12-38-142.netscape.com) has joined #mozilla
gisburnimoT: YOu can can enable some generic tuning stuff assuming you are not low on memory on that box...
imoTgisburn: what kind of?
-->|BenGoodgerTransit (ben@210-54-81-165.adsl.xtra.co.nz) has joined #mozilla
imoTgisburn: look at http://lxr.mozilla.org/seamonkey/source/widget/timer/src/unix/xlib/nsTimerXlib.cpp#366
imoTgisburn: isnt that wrong? if you have high prioritu event in 5min and low priority in 1sec.. you get next event = 5min
gisburn imoT: increase lookup buffers, inode cache, UFS write low/high watermarks (or disable UFS write throttle completly if disks are fast enougth...), tunr DNLC cache (Directory Name Lookup Cache) etc. etc...
=-=BenGoodgerTransit is now known as BenGoodger
gisburnimoT: Sh*t... I already closed by browser... uhm... tomorrow ?

imoTgisburn: how slow coputer you have? :)
gisburnimoT: Ultra5/440MHz... not slow... but the human in front of that beast is tired...
gisburnimoT: I may give wrong answers if "uptime" >= 24hours...
gisburnimoT: I assume I should look NOW, right ?
imoTgisburn: those ufs directory writes kills performance if there isnt write buffered raid...
imoTgisburn: no.. go sleep and look tomorrow
gisburn imoT: That's why Solaris has that UFS write throttle stuff. But you do not need it if your disks are fast enougth and/or have the write cache enabled...
gisburnimoT: Thanks!

gisburnimoT: But you can increase the write buffer... and play with the low/high watermark to tune your box...
imoTgisburn: it really sucks when "rm -rf obj-dir" takes 2-5min :P
gisburnimoT: For example... Blade100 has _slow_ disks... after some tuning the box compiles the Zilla now 26% faster after I gave the kernelsome memory for buffering/inode cache/DNLC etc... :-)
