Introduction
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. I'm going to
demonstrate Gecko, Netscape's new high performance browser engine. Gecko
has been designed from the ground up to be small, speedy,
and standards compliant. The Gecko browser engine itself fits on
a single floppy disk, enabling Netscape to release a client which will
be as small as 3MB for the minimum configuration. Gecko is speedy, displaying
web pages up to ten times faster than previous browsers. Gecko is also
the first fully standards compliant browser ever, featuring full support
for:
-
Cascading Style Sheets, level 1 (CSS1) for formatting
HTML and XML pages
-
Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) 4.0
-
Extensible Markup Language (XML)
-
Document Object Model, level 1 (DOM1)
-
Resource Definition Framework (RDF)
Finally, Gecko has been developed using open source,
ensuring high quality.
I'm going to show you a demo of a spreadsheet.
This spreadsheet looks like a desktop application and has an interactive
user interface, but it's been implemented as a web page using W3C standards.
Gecko's full support for W3C standards saves developers from having to
study proprietary or platform-dependent technologies.
Steps of Demo
-
Open spreadsheet24.html in M10 AppRunner or later.
-
Click in cell A0, enter an integer, and hit return.
-
Repeat for cells A1-A3.
-
Click in cell A4.
-
Click the "summation" toolbar button (looks like a crooked E).
-
Click between the parentheses and enter a0:a3 (note: this is case-sensitive!)
-
Hit return. A0-A3 are summed and sum is displayed in A4.
Summary
As you can see, Gecko's full support for W3C standards allows web develops
to create rich web pages and applications using web standards. The
Gecko layout engine is small, speedy, standards compliant, and open source,
enabling a richer, faster web browsing experience. Thank you very much
for your time.
