Congress Again
Considering Database Protection Bill
An anonymous reader writes
"Yahoo News is [0]reporting on a new bill in Congress: '... a proposed bill that
would prevent wholesale copying of school guides, news archives and other
databases which do not enjoy copyright protection.'" The idea of
[1]database protection legislation has been kicking around for a long time.
It's a bad idea, but it would make a lot of money for a few companies,

SCO's
Next Target: SGI?
[0]FatRatBastard writes
"ZDNet News is [1]speculating that SCO's next target in its legal actions against
Linux may be SGI. According to the article its legal strategy will be to
claim that XFS is a Unix derivative and therefore under SCO
control, much like they claim JFS is in their suit with IBM. One fact not
mentioned in the article that would support SGI being the next target
is the malloc code they claimed was infringing at this years SCOForum

Astronomy Picture of the
Day for September 7 2003: The Galactic
Center in Infrared
The center of our Galaxy
is a busy place. In visible
light, much of the Galactic Center
is obscured by opaque dust. In infrared
light, however, dust glows more and obscures less, allowing nearly
one million stars to be recorded in the above
photograph. The Galactic Center
itself appears
on the right and is located about 30,000 light
years away towards the constellation of Sagittarius.
The Galactic
Plane of our Milky
Way Galaxy, the plane in which the Sun orbits,
is identifiable by the dark diagonal
dust lane. The absorbing dust
grains are created in the atmospheres of cool red-giant stars
and grow in molecular
clouds. The region directly surrounding the Galactic Center
glows brightly in radio and high-energy
radiation, and is thought to house a large black hole.

Biomolecule behaves
like a wave
Physicists at the University of Vienna in Austria have observed
wav-e-particle duality in a biomolecule for the first time. The team
also reports observing wave-like behaviour in the most massive molecule
yet - a fluorinated ‘buckyball’. It is twice as large as the previously
biggest molecule known to exhibit quantum wave-like behaviour (L
Hackermüller et al. 2003 Phys. Rev. Lett. 91

A.Word.A.Day--nom de guerre
nom de guerre (nom deh GARE, rhymes
with dare) noun, plural noms de guerre
An assumed name; pseudonym.
[From French, nom
(name) + de (of) + guerre (war). A related term is guerrilla. Both
derive from the same Indo-European root wers- (to confuse, to mix up), also the
root of such words as worse, worst, and war.]
Now you know what a war
really is!
"Her eBay nom de guerre was
Rawhamburger."
Anemona
Hartocollis; A Woodworker Without White Gloves; The New York Times; Nov 3, 2002.
"Better known by his nom de
guerre as Abu Al Abed, Al Bassoumi recalls in detail his childhood and the happy and
sad events of that period."

If you've ever wondered whether
infantry has anything to do with infants you're not alone. In fact, it does.
Literally speaking, infantry is made up of infants. The word infant here
doesn't refer to the current sense of a baby but rather to the Italian form
infante meaning a youth or a foot-soldier. It gets even more
interesting as we travel further back. The word infant derives from Latin fari
(to speak), so an infant is literally one who is unable to speak
(yet). From being one who doesn't speak, to a foot-soldier, the word has
come a long way. Who said words were boring?
(In legal terminology, the word
infant still refers to a youth, anyone below the age of majority or a minor.)
In contrast to that word, there are
many terms with origins in war that are now used in more general senses.
This week we look at five of them.

If only I may grow: firmer,
simpler, -- quieter, warmer.

Humor: Playground Treated To
Hot Pug-On-Pug Action
PROVIDENCE, RI—Children playing on
the swingsets at Waldo Street Tot
Lot were treated to a raw, uncensored display of hot pug-on-pug action,
sources reported Tuesday. "First the one doggy got behind the other
doggy," said Andy Haupert, 6. "Then the first doggy tried to get on top
of the other doggy while the other doggy tried to run away. It was
really funny." The canine copulation has been the most talked-about
animal-related playground incident since June, when a pigeon crapped
all the way down the slide.

Humor: Gary Busey Nearly Drowns
Recovering Pork Chop From Swimming Pool
LOS ANGELES—Actor Gary Busey was
flown from his Malibu home to
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after he nearly drowned trying to retrieve
a pork chop from the bottom of his swimming pool Tuesday. "We're eating
on the patio, and Gary suddenly shouts, 'Let's have dinner in the
pool!' and starts throwing baby red potatoes and hunks of meat into the
water," said Lupo Risinger, Busey's friend and next-door neighbor.
"Well, the pork chop he threw sank like a stone, and—you know Gary—he
wouldn't come up for air until he had that sucker in his teeth." Busey
is currently listed in "marginally stable" condition.

AWJA, IRAQ—Relatives, sorting

Tuesday, couldn't bear to discard one of the deceased tyrant's favorite
torture devices. "Oh, how Uday loved his electric nutsack shocker,"
said Uday's uncle Karim Suleiman al-Majid, as he sifted through a box
of clamps, cables, saws, and 8-volt batteries. "And here's that trusty
little knife he would use to dig eyeballs out of their sockets."
Al-Majid said he is sure that Uday would have wanted his favorite
cousin Nawaf to have the roll of flensing wire
