Reliability, Availability, and Serviceability (RAS)Reliability, Fault Tolerance, and Data Integrity: The reliability of the Models 6E3 and 6C3 systems start with reliable components, devices, and subsystems. During the design and development process, subsystems go through rigorous verification and integration testing processes. During system manufacturing, systems go through a thorough testing process to ensure highest product quality level. The Models 6E3 and 6C3 systems L3 cache and system memory offer error checking and correcting (ECC) fault-tolerant features. ECC is designed to correct environmentally induced, single-bit, intermittent memory failures and single-bit hard failures. With ECC, the likelihood of memory failures will be substantially reduced. ECC also provides double-bit memory error detection that helps protect data integrity in the event of a double-bit memory failure. System memory also provides 4-bit packet error detection that helps to protect data integrity in the event of a DRAM chip failure. The system bus, I/O bus, and PCI buses are designed with parity error detection. Disk mirroring and disk controller duplexing capability are also provided by the AIX operating system. The Journaled File System of the AIX operating system maintains file system consistency and reduces the likelihood of data loss when the system is abnormally halted due to a power failure. PCI Extended Error Handling (EEH)1: In the past, PCI Bus Parity errors caused a global machine check interrupt, which eventually required a system reboot to continue. In the Model 6E3 and 6C3 systems, new I/O drawer hardware, system firmware, and AIX interaction have been designed to allow transparent recovery of intermittent PCI bus parity errors and graceful transition to the I/O device available state in the case of a permanent parity error in the PCI bus. This mechanism is called the PCI Extended Error Handling (EEH). EEH-enabled adapters respond to a special data packet generated from the affected PCI slot hardware by calling system firmware, which will examine the affected bus, allow the device driver to reset it, and continue without a system reboot. Currently, Linux does not support the EEH behavior. In the event of a PCI error, the system will machine check and a reboot will be required to continue.
Memory Error Correction Extensions: The standard memory card has single error-correct and double-error detect ECC circuitry to correct single-bit memory failures. The double-bit detection helps maintain data integrity by detecting and reporting multiple errors beyond what the ECC circuitry can correct. The memory chips are organized such that the failure of any specific memory module only affects a single bit within an ECC word (bit scattering) thus allowing for error correction and continued operation in the presence of a complete chip failure (Chipkill™ recovery). The memory card also utilizes memory scrubbing and thresholding to determine when spare memory modules, if available, within each bank of memory should be used to replace ones that have exceeded their threshold value (dynamic bit steering). Redundancy for Array Self-Healing: Although the most likely failure event in a processor is a soft single-bit error in one of its caches, there are other events that can occur, and they need to be distinguished from one another. For the L1, L2, and L3 caches and their directories, hardware and firmware keep track of whether permanent errors are being corrected beyond a threshold. If exceeded, a deferred repair error log is created. Additional run-time availability actions, such as CPU vary off1 or L3 cache line delete, are also initiated. L1, L2 caches and L2, L3 directories on the POWER4+ chip are manufactured with spare bits in their arrays that can be accessed via programmable steering logic to replace faulty bits in the respective arrays. This is analogous to the redundant bit steering employed in main store as a mechanism to avoid physical repair that is also implemented in POWER4+ systems. The steering logic is activated during processor initialization and is initiated by the built-in self-test (BIST) at power-on time. L3 cache redundancy is implemented at the cache line granularity level. Exceeding correctable error thresholds while running causes invocation of a dynamic L3 cache line delete function, capable of up to two deletes per cache. In the rare event of solid bit errors exceeding this quantity, the cache continues to run, but a message calling for deferred repair is issued. If the system is rebooted without such repair, the L3 cache is placed in bypass mode and the system comes up with this cache deconfigured. Service Processor: A Service Processor included in the Models 6E3 and 6C3 gives you an immediate means to diagnose, check status, and sense operational conditions of a remote system, even when the main processor is inoperable. The Service Processor enables firmware and operating system surveillance1, several remote power controls, environmental monitoring (only critical errors are supported under Linux), reset, and boot features along with remote maintenance and diagnostic activities, including console mirroring. The Service Processor can place calls to report surveillance failures, critical environmental faults, and critical processing faults.
Mutual Surveillance: The Service Processor can monitor the operation of the firmware during the boot process, and it can monitor the operating system for loss of control1. It also allows the operating system to monitor for Service Processor activity1. The Service Processor can take appropriate action, including calling for service, when it detects the firmware or the operating system1 has lost control. Likewise, the operating system can request a Service Processor repair action, if necessary1. Environmental Monitoring Functions
Error Handling and Reporting: In the unlikely event of system hardware or environmentally induced failure, the system Run-time Error Capture capability1 systematically analyzes the hardware error signature to determine the cause of failure. The analysis result will be stored in system NVRAM. When the system can be successfully rebooted either manually or automatically, the error will be reported to the AIX operating system. ELA1 can be used to display the failure cause and the physical location of failing hardware. With the integrated Service Processor, the system has the ability to send out automatically an alert via phone line to a pager or call for service in the event of critical system failure. A hardware fault will also turn on the two Attention Indicators (one located on the front of the system unit and the other on the rear of the system unit) to alert the user of an internal hardware problem. The indicator may also be activated by the operator as a tool to allow system identification. For identification, the indicators will flash, whereas the indicator will be on solid when an error condition occurs. Availability Enhancement Functions
Serviceability: The Models 6E3 and 6C3 are designed for customer setup of the machine and for subsequent addition of most features (adapters/devices)1. For a fee, IBM Service can perform the installation.
Note: Because the 7029-6E3 and 6C3 systems have an optional diskette drive (#2611) and DVD-ROM (#2640), alternate methods for maintaining and servicing the system need to be available for use if the diskette drive and DVD-ROM are not ordered; an external Internet connection must be available to maintain or update system microcode to the latest required level. Electronic Service Agent™: The Electronic Service Agent1 is available at no additional charge. When installed on the pSeries, the Electronic Service Agent can enhance IBM's ability to provide the system with maintenance service. The Electronic Service Agent:
Online Customer Support (OCS): OCS for hardware problem reporting may be performed via remote login by pSeries specialists using normal AIX facilities1. The Electronic Service Agent software can also be used for this capability. AIX Support offerings will be under AIXSERV and Electronic Service Agent. Product positioningWith their performance, and SMP capability, the Model 6E3 and Model 6C3 are well-positioned for transaction-intensive server solutions such as, e-commerce, database, and application database server applications. The Model 6E3 and Model 6C3 provide 2-way SMP capability, up to 16 GB of memory, and up to 1174.4 GB of internal DASD, which make an excellent solution for many demanding commercial applications. It is a cost-effective performance alternative to the pSeries p610 Models 6E1 and 6C1. The Model 6E3 and Model 6C3 also offer a variety of high availability features such as:
Expedited Delivery Service (EDS)Machine type/model 0017-001 is being announced on the pSeries 615 Models 6E3 and 6C3 to carry the charge for the EDS. This charge will show up on the customer's billing as EDS. The request for EDS is made by including no-charge feature number 1736 on each machine type/model ordered. For every pSeries or RS/6000® system ordered with EDS, one 0017-001 machine type/model will be added to the multisystem order. For other valid machine type/models ordered, 0017-001 will not be added to the order. When 0017-001 is present on a multisystem order, only those machine type/models with feature number 1736 (EDS Indicator) that can be ordered on them will be allowed to be included in the multisystem order. Feature number 1736 is initially valid on the following machine type/models and will not carry an EDS charge. These machine type/models cannot be ordered with feature number 1736 unless ordered on a multisystem order with pSeries 615 Model 6E3 or 6C3.
Excluded from the EDS offering are all orders intended to be processed through the Rochester Customer Solution Center (#5001) or the CCS Services in Austin (#0986). For machine type/models 2104-DU3 and 7133-D40, the Rochester source feature number (#0987) must be selected for the EDS Indicator (#1736) to be selected. No alterations adding or deleting the EDS Indicator (#1736) will be allowed on orders within five days of the Planned Supply Shipment Date (PSSD). Trademarks

Security, auditability, and controlThis product uses the security and auditability features of host software and application software. The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities. Terms and conditionsThis product is available for purchase under the terms of the IBM Customer Agreement (ICA). IBM hardware products are manufactured from new parts, or new and used parts. In some cases, the hardware product may have been previously installed. Regardless, IBM warranty terms apply. Volume Orders: Contact your IBM representative. IBM credit corporation financing: Yes Warranty Service: If required, IBM provides repair or exchange service depending on the type of warranty specified for your machine below. Scheduling of service will depend on the time of your call and is subject to parts availability. Service levels are response time objectives and are not guaranteed. The specified level of warranty service may not be available in all worldwide locations. Additional charges may apply outside IBM's normal service area. Contact your local IBM representative or your reseller for country and location-specific information. IBM On-site repair (IOR), Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., local time (excluding IBM holidays), next-business-day service. Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) Service: Some parts of the system may be designated as CRU. If your problem can be resolved with a CRU (for example, keyboard, mouse, speaker, memory, HDD, and other easily replaceable parts), IBM will ship these parts to you for replacement by you. If IBM instructs you to return the replaced CRU, you are responsible for returning it to IBM in accordance with IBM's instructions. If you do not return the defective CRU, if IBM so instructs within 30 days of your receipt of the replacement CRU, IBM may charge you for the replacement.
The designation of a part as IOR or CRU is independent of response time. It is possible that when upgrading to a warranty with improved response time, the appropriate problem resolution will still be to ship a CRU part to the customer for that installation.
