Dear Michael,
Our fight to get truly effective arms control regulations in
the UK goes on. Recent amendments to the bill mean we are
counting on you to act today.
Jack Straw, Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth
Affairs, has recently allowed British equipment to go to the
US for onward export to Israel. He did this simply by issuing
new guidance on existing export licensing decisions. His
actions make a mockery of attempts to develop truly effective
controls on arms exports.
Oxfam has campaigned hard with your help to strengthen the
Bill, but it is nowhere near tough enough. The Export Control
Bill is in its final stages before becoming law – if we act
quickly we can still make an impact.
Please write to the two influential Lords listed below, who we
know are interested in the issue of arms controls. In your own
words, ask them to:
uphold the House of Lords' hard-fought amendment to strengthen
the sustainable development clause and reject the government's
attempt to overturn this decision. The Lords will be voting on
this on 23 July, so there is no time to be lost in sending your
letter
and ask them to write to the Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw,
expressing concern over his new guidance and the lack of any
debate prior to his decision.
Thank you for taking this action. Please forward this email to
uam@oxfam.org.uk to confirm that you have written - that helps us
know that you've made a difference.
