Visual Design (temporary description):

Names

LibreOffice

The official product name is "LibreOffice". For more information how the name "LibreOffice" was chosen, please have a look at the blog posting Agreeing on the child's name...

Details:

We got questions how to pronounce the name. Here are sound files for both Libre and Office.

Some people asked for an acronym and the unofficial "LibO" has been proposed.

The Document Foundation

The Document Foundation is an independent self-governing meritocratic foundation. For more information, please have a look at the Document Foundation website.

For more information about the "Document Symbol" please have a look at the blog posting 1001 Document Icons

Usage Examples

Logos

Introduction

The logo is both used to represent the software "LibreOffice" and to refer to its home - The Document Foundation.

Guidelines and Best Practices

LibreOffice-Initial-Artwork-Colors Guidelines Valid2.png

Space is information, although it seems that "nothing" is there. So please avoid to place any other elements close to the logo. More detailed, at least half the width of the "Document Symbol" is used for:

  • space around the logo
  • between the "Document Symbol" and the logo text
LibreOffice-Initial-Artwork-Logo Guidelines Spacing.png
LibreOffice-Initial-Artwork-Logo Guidelines Valid2.png
  • You may use a stand alone "LibreOffice" text.
LibreOffice-Initial-Artwork-Logo Guidelines Valid3.png
  • You may use a stand alone "Document Symbol".
LibreOffice-Initial-Artwork-Logo Guidelines Invalid1.png
  • Don't change the position or the order of the branding elements.
LibreOffice-Initial-Artwork-Logo Guidelines Invalid2.png
  • Don't change the logo by e.g. adding additional graphic elements to the "Document Symbol".
LibreOffice-Initial-Artwork-Logo Guidelines Invalid3.png
  • Don't change the aspect ration of the graphic by stretching it (e.g. changing either height or width). Please keep the aspect ratio and take care that the graphic works pixel perfect on any display.
LibreOffice-Initial-Artwork-Logo Guidelines Invalid4.png
  • Dont' change the spacing of the elements. In this example, the minimum size between "Document Symbol" and the logo text is too small.

Usage Examples

Resources

The LibreOffice logo consists of a symbol resembling sheet of paper with a cut-off right upper corner (like an arrow pointing up) and the writing "LibreOffice". For official representation of the community a sub-line "The Document Foundation" can be added, other appearances should use the version without subline.

For details please have a look at the Logo policy wiki page.

Fonts

Introduction

The font "Vegur" has been selected for the use within the LibreOffice logo and accompanying text. It was important to find something that appears to be elegant, friendly and clean. For more information how the font has been selected and the text logo has been developed, please have a look at the blog posting Fontastic! How LibreOffice got its font ....

It is known that the font currently lacks some international support, so there is a need for either using additional fonts or replacing this font with a free alternative with improved international support. Until we have a full replacement, the font "Vegur" should work fine in most cases.

Guidelines and Best Practices

LibreOffice-Initial-Artwork-Colors Guidelines Valid1.png LibreOffice is the name of the product, whereas ...
  • ... Libre is "bold" to emphasize its meaning
  • ... Office is "normal" to avoid thickness and being visually bloated or aggressive.
LibreOffice-Initial-Artwork-Fonts Guidelines Invalid1.png
  • Don't use the font "Vegur" to mimic the LibreOffice logo text. The spacing has been improved; if possible, use the logo graphic files.
LibreOffice-Initial-Artwork-Fonts Guidelines Invalid2.png
  • Don't use different fonts within the logo. Instead, use the logo graphic files.
LibreOffice-Initial-Artwork-Fonts Guidelines Invalid3.png
  • Don't change the emphasis of the logo text. The emphasis is on "Libre" (bold), not "Office" (normal).

Guidelines and Best Practices

LibreOffice-Initial-Artwork-Colors Guidelines Valid1.png
  • The base color for the logo and all the artwork is LibreGreen 1.
  • The main color may be combined with the accent colors (and its color variations) and any kind of gray (including white and black).
  • The colored logo works best on white or light gray background.
LibreOffice-Initial-Artwork-Colors Guidelines Valid2.png
  • If the background color is rather dark, please use the inverse logo instead.
LibreOffice-Initial-Artwork-Colors Guidelines Invalid1.png
  • Don't exchange the color for parts of the logo text.
LibreOffice-Initial-Artwork-Colors Guidelines Invalid2.png
  • Don't use the colored logo version on a background that is either very intense or very dark. Do use the inverse color version instead.
LibreOffice-Initial-Artwork-Colors Guidelines Invalid3.png
  • Don't use the colored logo version on accent color backgrounds. Do use the inverse color version instead.
